The real difference

Excire is a full-featured digital asset manager with AI capabilities that rival (and often exceed) what's built into Lightroom. It can analyze your photos to detect faces, identify objects, assess image quality, and even suggest the “best” shots automatically using aesthetic scoring.

Selekt is laser-focused on the culling workflow — the specific task of going through a shoot and deciding which images to keep. Scene-based organization, keyboard-driven rating, side-by-side comparison, and auto-advance on rate. That's the job, and nothing else.

The question isn't which is “better” — it's which problem you're trying to solve.

When to choose each

Choose Excire if...

  • • You want AI to auto-cull for you (hands-off)
  • • You need a full DAM to replace or augment Lightroom
  • • You prefer aesthetic scoring over manual selection
  • • You have large archives to search and organize
  • • You value perpetual licensing over subscription
  • • Mobile workflow isn't important to you

Choose Selekt if...

  • • You want to stay in control of every selection
  • • Speed through scenes > AI auto-decisions
  • • You already have Lightroom, Capture One, or Bridge
  • • Mobile review (iPad, iPhone) matters (coming soon)
  • • You want a lightweight tool that does one thing well
  • • Free tier is important to get started

AI culling: the honest take

Excire's AI aesthetic scoring is impressive technology. It analyzes composition, exposure, sharpness, and other technical factors to rank your images automatically. For certain workflows — especially high-volume work where “good enough” is the goal — this can be a huge time saver.

But AI culling has inherent limitations. The algorithm doesn't know that the slightly underexposed frame is actually the one where your subject's expression is perfect. It doesn't understand that the “messy” composition was intentional. It optimizes for technical correctness, not creative intent.

Selekt takes a different approach: we don't try to choose for you. Instead, we make the manual selection process so fast that AI auto-culling becomes unnecessary. With scene grouping, keyboard shortcuts, and auto-advance, most photographers can cull 1,000+ photos in under an hour while staying in complete control.

Selekt

  • Free tier: Unlimited culling, full workflow

Excire

  • Excire Search (Lightroom plugin): €99 perpetual
  • Excire Foto (standalone DAM): €99-199 perpetual

Excire's perpetual licensing is attractive if you prefer one-time purchases. Selekt's subscription includes ongoing updates (with mobile apps coming soon), plus a free tier with unlimited culling to get started.

Workflow integration

Excire is designed to either replace Lightroom's cataloging entirely (with Excire Foto) or enhance it (with Excire Search as a plugin). If you're already deep in the Lightroom ecosystem, Excire Search adds AI search and culling without changing your workflow. The standalone version is for photographers who want to escape Lightroom entirely.

Selekt sits in front of any editor. Import a shoot, cull it, export XMP sidecars, and your picks appear ready-to-edit in Lightroom, Capture One, Bridge, or any app that reads XMP. We don't try to be your DAM — we just make the culling step faster.
